Vera Marie Holseid, age 96 of Lincoln, formerly of Perry, Iowa, died September 2, 2014. Vera was born February 15, 1918 in Perry, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Ida (Klinzman) Laborde. She is survived by her daughters Virginia (Gary) Thomas. Carolyn (Gerald) Probst and Barbara (William) Blake; granddaughters Jennifer (Jeremy) Marlar and Angela (Trevor) Gensler; and great grandchildren Alexis, Blake and Wyatt Marlar, Brody and Tenley Gensler. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald Holseid and brother Kenneth Laborde.
Vera lived in Perry for 80 years before moving to Lincoln. She graduated from Perry High School in 1936 and married to Donald on May 11, 1941. She was a member of Community of Christ Church and for many years was a braille transcriber for the blind.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, September 5th at Community of Christ Church, 44th and South St. Lincoln. No viewing/cremation. Interment of ashes will be at Fairview cemetery, Lincoln.
Carolyn Kay Savage Hagen, age 70, of Lincoln, passed away Sept. 3, 2014. A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 8, at the Mausoleum in Wyuka Cemetery; use 41st & Vine entrance. Pastor Mike Mcmurtry will be officiating.
Carolyn is survived by her son, Daniel Savage; and her sister, Bonnie (Richard) Nannen.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Earl Masters and Carrol Masters Glantz; husband, Clifford Hagen; sister, Bette Sabin; and brothers, William “Bill” (Rita) Masters, and Donald Masters.

Lois Ann Fitch, age 57, of Wilber, NE passed away on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014 at Bryan Hospital in Lincoln surrounded by her family, after a short and sudden battle with cancer. Lois was born on July 18, 1957 to Otto and Bernitta (Meyer) Finke. She grew up in Tecumseh, NE graduating high school in 1975. Lois attended UNL for several years and also Lincoln School of Commerce.
She was employed by Farmland Foods in Crete for many years and was very much involved in her community, church, and with her family. Lois enjoyed the organizations she was a member of; loved singing, especially at her church; Monday night community dinners; and had a love for animals including her faithful cat Nikki.
Lois is survived by her daughter, Jessica (Jared) Johnson of Lincoln; her son Jeremy Fitch of Lincoln; sister, Linda (Tim) Morrissey of Wilber; niece, Stephanie Morrissey of Lincoln; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, and beloved friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
A Celebration of Life Service is being held in Wilber at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church on Sept. 10th at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to the family for designation to Lois’ favorite charities. Sheila G. Becker, age 49, of Lincoln passed away at home surrounded by her family on September 9, 2014. Sheila was born on Sept. 26, 1964 to Larry and Sandra (Gross) Dvorak of Lincoln.
Sheila is survived by her husband, Matt Becker of Lincoln; mother, Sandra Dvorak Avilla of Lincoln; son, Nicholas Becker of Lincoln; sister, Laurie Dvorak of Salt Lake City; brothers, Larry Dvorak and Marcus Dvorak; and many more beloved family members and friends.
She is preceded in death by her father.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, Sept. 15, 2014 at Wyuka Funeral Home in Lincoln at 10:30 A.M. with Pastor Mike Mcmurtry officiating. Burial will be in Wyuka Cemetery at a later date.
Dale Verne Schmidt, age 77, of Lincoln passed away Sept. 10, 2014 at Bryan Hospital West surrounded by his family. Dale was born on June 10, 1937 in Lincoln to Henry and Frances (Lundgren) Schmidt. He graduated from Lincoln High and attended UNL. Dale proudly served our country from 1960-1966 in the Nebraska Air National Guard as Staff Sergeant.
Dale was the retired owner of Danielson Floral, and was accepted into the Society of American Florists by President and Mrs. Carter in 1978 at the White House.
He is survived by his loving wife Carol; son, Monte Dale (Mary) Schmidt; daughter, Suzanne (Jamie) Bates; sister, Shirley Jacobs; brother, Milton Schmidt; grandsons, Anthony (Katie), Dillon Dale, Jackson, and Cooper Bates; granddaughter, Mollie Jean Bates; sister-in-law, Donna (Frank) Pryor; and many more beloved friends and relatives.
Dale is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald Schmidt; and sisters, Dorothy Auger and Norma Rivers.
A Memorial Service will be held at Wyuka Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, Sept. 13 with Pastor Dennis Smith officiating. In lieu of flowers Memorials suggested to the family for later charity designation.
Rebecca Kanu, age 47 of Lincoln passed away September 10, 2014. She was born May 5, 1967 in Freetown, Sierra Leone to Oshoba Carlton-Carew and Hawa Kamara.
Survivors include her husband, Umaru Kanu of Lincoln; Sons, Philemon and Samuel Kanu. Sisters, Moreneka Lake and Mafudia Dumbuya. Brothers, Ladi Carlton-Carew, Samuel Carlton-Carew and Oshoba Carlton-Carew.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, September 26, 2014 at Praise Temple Church, Lincoln. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church.

Meet in front of Rudge Chapel
Beverly J. Waters, age 54, formerly of Grand Island passed away on August 8, 2014 in Beatrice under the care of Beatrice Home Health and Hospital. Beverly was born and grew up in Grand Island, the daughter of Richard and Blanche (Golus) Waters. She was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral for many years where she served as a Eucharistic Minister.
Beverly was a special soul and blessed the lives she touched. Being challenged with Downs Syndrome she loved to draw and paint – she made many award winning wall hangings for the Fair. She loved music, her family & friends, animals, and her cat “Ling-Ling”. Beverly was able to volunteer at the Grand Island Zoo, and do other various volunteer work during her life which she enjoyed greatly.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Robert John Waters.
Beverly is survived by her sisters, Sherry (Allan) Spiehs of Beatrice and JoAnne (Michael) Spaulding of Lincoln; brother, Rich (Kathy) Waters of Topeka, KS; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services are being held at Wyuka Funeral Home Chapel in Lincoln, NE at 10:30 a.m. on Wed. Aug. 13 with visitation one hour prior; burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Lincoln. Father Robert Barnhill from Beatrice will be the Officiate.

FLORENCE HANSEN BRIDGE, age 78, of Lincoln, passed away on Sept. 24th, 2014 surrounded by her family. Born to Neils Peter Hansen and Karen Albretsen Hansen on Sept. 29, 1935.
Florence attended Clinton Elementary, Whittier, Teachers College High in NE; and then NE Wesleyan, UNL, Northwest Texas School of Nursing and Bryan School of Nursing. She belonged to Delta Zeta Sorority, Danish Sisterhood Lodge #90; she was also a Campfire Girls Leader, Job’s Daughter’s Club President, and was very active in her church choir at Grace Lutheran where she was confirmed at age 7.
Florence is survived by her spouse, John “Jack” Bridge; daughters, Sheryl (Rob) Alderman, Brenda (Gerald) Schellhorn, and Julie Crane; a son, Tom Bridge; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; nephew, Steve Ruby & Family; and several cousins.
Preceded in death by her parents; and daughter Carrie Lynn Bridge.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29th at Grace Lutheran Church,2225 Washington St, Lincoln with a visitation one hour prior at the church; Rev. Dr. Robert Rademacher will be officiating. Burial following service at Wyuka Cemetery, 3600 “O” St. An Evening Visitation will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28th at Wyuka Funeral Home with the family present.
LAURI L. MUEHLHAUSEN, age 58, of Lincoln, NE passed away on Sept. 21, 2014 in Plano, TX surrounded by her close family, holding the hands of her children while on her journey to heaven. Lauri is the daughter of Richard and Shirley Epp of Lincoln, she grew up in Lincoln, NE and Rice Lake, WI; graduating from Lincoln East High in 1973.
Lauri attended Bryan School of Nursing, most of her nursing career was spent with First Care Home Health Lincoln; most recently she worked in Denton, TX with Res Care Nursing.
She is survived by her mother, Shirley Epp; her children, Brandon and Kylee Muehlhausen; and three sisters, Cindy Paulus, Nancy Worster, and Kim Epp.
Lauri is preceded in death by her father.
The Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 29th at Christ Lutheran Church, 4325 Sumner St, Lincoln with Pastor Luke Schnake officiating. (no visitation) Burial and Graveside Service will follow at Wyuka Cemetery, 3600 “O” St., Lincoln.

Marcia M. McCoy, age 57 of Lincoln passed away September 25, 2014. She was born February 15, 1957 in Lincoln to Murell V. and Maydene (Stephens) McCoy.
Survivors include her father, Murell of Lincoln. Brother and sister-in-law, Monte and Christine McCoy of Eagle; aunt, Sharon Matlock of Colorado Springs; Uncle, Earl McCoy of Seattle, Washington; Uncle, Paul Stephens of Lincoln. Nephew and spouse, Mitchell and Tanya McCoy of Seattle. Preceded in death by her mother, Maydene and niece, Heather Gustafson.

Virginia Liberty Portsche, 96, of Lincoln, passed away peacefully at her home with family members, her dog Roone, friends and hospice personnel at 10:22 p.m., Tuesday, September 30, 2014. She was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on October 27, 1917 to Roy and Estelle (Lewis) League. Following the untimely death of her father, the family moved to Omaha in 1920. Virginia graduated from Omaha North High School in 1935, and moved with her family to Lincoln that same year. She was married to Paul Portsche, Jr., of Lincoln in 1937. Virginia was active in numerous activities during her life. During her earlier years while living in Havelock, she was a wonderful wife and mother to her two sons, Gary Lee Portsche (now deceased), and Robert Lynn Portsche. She was active in the Havelock Parent Teachers Association (PTA), serving as President for three terms, and also served as Vice President for the Interclub Council of the PTA. She was a Den Mother for Cub Scout Pack 23 at Havelock School. She campaigned for Havelock business man Victor E. Anderson during his successful campaigns for the Nebraska Legislature, Mayor of Lincoln, and, Governor of Nebraska. She was active with others in the organization of the Havelock Swingers Square Dance Group, and with the organization of the “Matronette Group.” She served on the Havelock Building Committee in efforts to keep the YWCA, and also served on the YWCA’s Garden Club. Virginia was a member of the Young Republicans, and served as Lancaster County Vice Chairwoman. She campaigned for Otto H. Liebers in his successful bid for State Senator for the 18th District Legislature. Virginia went to work outside of the home on February 12, 1951. She began work for the Military Department of the State of Nebraska at the Nebraska State Capital, working as a Personnel Clerk under Lt. General Guy N. Henninger. Virginia served as General Chairperson of the State House Activities Committee. In 1963, she was promoted to be Secretary to the Adjutant General of the Nebraska National Guard, serving under Major General Lyle Welch and later under Major General Francis Winner. She was honored by being the recipient of the Legion of Merit Award for service to the Military Department of the State of Nebraska by Major General James Carmona, The Adjutant General. Virginia was appointed to the Nebraska Commission for the Status of Women by Governor Frank Morrison. She had the opportunity to serve as Chairperson for that Commission for two terms. During this time, she met and befriended numerous other women throughout the State of Nebraska who also had been appointed to the Commision. When the Nebraska Commission for the Status of Women was decommissioned, the ladies established the Priors Club of Nebraska, composed for prior members of this commission. Rose Lute (now deceased) of Ogallala served the the first chairperson of this group, and Virginia later served as chairperson for two terms, later being Secretary and Treasurer. The Prior’s Club was ultimately terminated as the ranks of the members decreased over the years. Virginia and her husband Paul were 20 year members of AKSARBEN. Virginia was a local ambassador for the Lincoln area, and sold memberships for this outstanding organization. She was elated to have danced with Liberace during one of his performances at Aksarben, at the same time that her husband Paul danced with Actress Carol Lawrence. She was appointed to the Judicial Nominating Committee by then Governor James J. Exon. She was also a member of the Nebraska Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Burlington Northern (BN) Cornhusker Club; and the BN Veterans. After her retirement from work outside the home, she continued to devote her time to voluntary projects, having donated over 2,000 hours of time to Bryan Medical Center East. She enjoyed doing this work to help others. Throughout her life, she demonstrated the unique quality of being a very caring person, both to people as well as to animals. She was a supporter of the Capital Humane Society, having recently donated all of her points from Russ’s IGA Market to that organization. She always had a pet, be it a dog or a cat, and loved every one of them. Her dog Roone, will miss his mother! Her greatest joy and pride for Virginia was her family.
Survivors include her son, Robert of Arlington, VA. Grandchildren, LeAnne Prenovost of Phoenix, AZ., Doug Portsche of Saginaw, TX., Jeff Portsche and Mike Portsche of Olathe, KS., Greg Portsche of Gilbert, AZ. Great grandchildren, Chad Rolstad of South Lake, TX., Tyler Rolstad of Great Lakes, Ill., Nicole Rolstad of Denver, CO., Allison Herrera of Phoenix, AZ., KayLynn Portsche of Olathe, KS., Ian Wilkinson of Phoenix, AZ., Madisyn, Hailey, Calley and Kelsey Portsche of Olathe, KS., Adrik Portsche of Olathe, KS., Alexandra Portsche of Gilbert, AZ. 4 Great, great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, son; Gary Lee Portsche and granddaughters; Lisa Wilkinson and Isabella Portsche.
Visitation will be on Friday, October 3, 2014 at Wyuka Funeral Home from 4:00-8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00-7:00 P.M. and Saturday from 9:00 A.M. until service time.

Sherrie Ann Nelson Gregory of Lincoln, born March 5, 1937 in St. Edward, NE; passed away at home on October 5, 2014 after a brave, no-holds-barred battle with cancer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Ruth Nelson of Tabor, IA where she lived until she attended and graduated from Stephens College, Columbia, MO. After she and husband David raised 4 children in Tabor, Sherrie began her real estate business in Lincoln. She became a savvy and successful developer of many acreage subdivisions in and around Lancaster County. Recognized by the NRD for her work in conservation, Sherrie strived to create home sites in the country while sustaining natural habitat. Her interest in investments led her to many Berkshire Hathaway annual meetings where she was very active in a group known as the Yellow Berkers. She was an avid collector of books, art and Mardi Gras memorabilia; loved to read and follow her beloved Huskers.
Sherrie is survived by four children, Mike Gregory, Kingfisher, OK, Greg (Jenna) Gregory, Sidney, IA, Dana (Bill) Ball, Valparaiso, NE, Kay (Mike) Berguin, Mesa, AZ; sister Kathy (Joel) Goebel, Gainesville, GA; nine grandchildren; one great granddaughter.
A Celebration of Sherrie’s Life will be at Wyuka Funeral Home Chapel, 3600 “O” Street, Lincoln, Sat., Oct. 11, 2014 at 2 p.m with Pastor Karen Clarke officiating. Family suggests memorials to Tabitha Hospice or UNMC Ovarian Cancer Research. Private family interment.
Giovanna Josephine Berry, age 87 of Lincoln, passed away October 5, 2014. She was born in Gorizia, Italy to Angelo and Carolina Carlotta (Craibig) Basso.
Survivors include her son, Larry L. Berry of Pisgah, Iowa and her daughter, Carla J. McArtor of Lincoln. Grandchildren, Kimberly Berry-Payne, Lora Ross, Jessica Berry, Aaron Karr, Heather Valdez, Janina Chapin and Jeremy K.C. McArtor. Great grandchildren, Darian, DominiQue, Kaiden, Arianna, Emily, William, Garris, Adra and Myah. Brother, Angelo Basso of Trieste, Italy. Preceded in death by her parents, husband, Leslie Berry, son, Michael K.C. Berry and a sister, Mafalda Basso.
Services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, October 9th at Wyuka Funeral Home with burial at Wyuka Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until service time on Thursday, October 9th at Wyuka Funeral Home.

ELWYN “Swede” J. GLOVER, 77, of Lincoln passed away on October 10, 2014 at Bryan East surrounded by his family after a sudden battle with cancer. Elwyn was born in Pilger, NE to Franklin and Ellen (Gemelke) Glover on Nov. 5, 1936; baptized at St. John’s Lutheran in 1938 and confirmed in 1951. Graduating Pilger High in 1955 he served 3 ½ years in the US Army based in Germany and France in the Artillery Missile Brigade. A beloved father and husband he was joined in marriage to Mary Negley in June, 1962; together they raised two children. He retired from Quebecor in 2004.
Elwyn served in the early years of Lincoln Lutheran Formation; served six years with the Orphan Grain Train in Lincoln; League President of Lincoln Midget Football since 1983; refereed High School Football for many years; umpired Triple A Softball at Ballard Field; served as Scout Master of Troop 24; worked on the Board of Properties for Cornhusker Council; he was an Elder at his church, taught Sunday School for many years; received many awards for his community service; enjoyed working with young people and loved the Lord.
Preceded in death by his parents; brother, Verilyn; and sister, Marlee Willis.
Survived by his wife Mary; daughter Suzanne (Chris) Walla of Bellevue; son, Brian (Gina) Glover of Lincoln; brothers, Bob (Darlene) of Oregon, Nordell of Kansas, and Darwyn (Pat) of Dakota City, NE; grandchildren, Andrew and Jeanette Glover of Lincoln, and Nicole Walla of Bellevue; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on October 18, 2014 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2001 S. 11th St., Lincoln with Rev. Jeffrey Bloom officiating. Family burial will be at a later date. Steven A. Hayes, 59, of Lincoln, NE passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family on October 17, 2014. He was born November 8, 1954 in Grants Pass, OR to Jay and Irene Hayes. Steve was a devoted and loving son, brother, uncle, great-uncle, and friend. Steve made lasting impressions on everyone that crossed his path, and he brought smiles to everyone’s faces and hearts; he will be missed dearly.
Steve was an executive chef for the Cornhusker Hotel at the Renaissance for the majority of his career. He earned the title of Employee of the Year in 1992. He was an avid sports enthusiast, and before his passing, he was very excited to hear that the Kansas City Royals are going to the World Series.
Steve always had a great sense of humor and made everyone laugh. He was an awesome party planner, storm chaser, and your one and only phone a friend trivia player. He enjoyed road trips and always wanted to see how far he could go on an empty tank of gas.
Family members include siblings: Sharon DeBusk, Connie Krueger, Mike Hayes, Kathy Sardeson, and Colleen McEnery. Nieces and Nephews: Chad Morrison, Trevis DeBusk, Charlene Schmeichel, Shaun Cox, Shannon Josoff, Kimberly Guenter, April Hansen, Abby Russell, and Dylan Floth. Steve also had 11 great nieces and nephews, and 1 great-great niece. Steve is preceded in death by his parents Jay and Irene Hayes and his younger brother Ron Hayes.
The celebration of Steve’s life will be held at Wyuka Funeral Home & Cemetery, 3600 O st, Lincoln, NE, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 1st. Luncheon (Husker tastee style) will follow graveside services at Wyuka Cemetery. Please feel free to wear Husker attire, related colors, or whatever you feel comfortable in.

Lucy Mae Marshall, age 91 of Lincoln, died October 22, 2014. She was born January 29, 1923 in Lincoln to William O. and Grace (Gooden) Martin. Lucy was employed with Tabitha for 30 years, and volunteered for the D.A.V., Special Olympics and ARC. She was also a member of Aldersgated United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. Lucy was an avid dog lover.
Survivors include her husband, Ervin “Bud” Marshall and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sue Ellen, Sister, Ellen Louise Wheeler and brothers, Owen Martin and Lawrence Martin.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 25th at Wyuka Funeral Home. Burial will be at Wyuka Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday, October 24th from 4-6 P.M. at Wyuka Funeral Home.
